Using Virtual Machine Labs for the Data Comm Class

by Andy Golub

Clinton Daniel demonstrates the VM Labs that accompany
Business Data Communications & IT Infrastructures
, Edition 3.0

Professors Agrawal and Daniel have developed a custom virtual machine (VM) to provide hands-on lab activities to accompany the latest edition of their book Business Data Communications & IT Infrastructures. Dr. Clinton demonstrated the features and capabilities of this system at EDSIGCON 2020.

The lab activity helps students gain a practical understanding of the logical layers included in the Open Standards Interconnect (OSI) model. As the student learner navigates through each of the OSI model layers, which map to the TCP/IP stack (Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data Link and Physical), they apply Networking and Operating System concepts using a Linux VM which can be downloaded and hosted on a laptop or PC.

These VM labs support online and hybrid delivery as well as provide expanded options for in-person classes.
